As diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome has increased, doctors are finding the condition in older children and adults. Parenting Asperger's, a site primarily dedicated to parents of children with Asperger's, is helping parents of adults with Asperger's to help their children adjust to a new diagnosis and become members of the workforce.

(PRWeb) July 17, 2010 – Over the past ten years, the medical community has been increasingly able to properly diagnose autism and related conditions on a more consistent basis. This has led to the increasec diagnosis of older children and adults with Asperger's syndrome, which has caused the parents of these individuals to scramble for support they never knew was needed.

The Parenting Asperger's Community, run by Dave Angel, a veteran social worker, has expanded its range of services to include help for parents of adults who have been recently diagnosed with Asperger's as well as those who have struggled with the condition their entire lives.

“Although it's certainly a rocky road for parents and children who go through life with Asperger's, it's even more difficult for those who haven't been properly diagnosed until recently,” explains Angel. “Though our site is primarily dedicated to parents of children with Asperger's, we recognize that there's a great need out there for help for parents of adults with this condition, and Parenting Asperger's Community is trying our best to fill that void.”

The site has several articles specifically related to finding employment opportunities for older children and adults with Asperger's. However, the forum is the primary place parents of adults with Asperger's can get current information regarding the most effective means of gaining employment for their children or in helping them cope with their condition.

“Parents of newly diagnosed adults and older children with Asperger's will find that many of the resources designed for younger children apply to them as well,” Angel adds. “Although no one can make up for the lost time of an incorrect or non-existent diagnosis, you can certainly hit the ground running once you know what you're dealing with.”
