Aspergers Short Q & A's

Every day on the site I am answering questions from members on all different aspects of Aspergers via email.

As many questions are often relevant for my parents I will post the questions and answers in this section for all to benefit from ...

What is the liklihood of an Aspergers diagnosis combined with a bipolar diagnosis?? My son who just turned 14 has been struggling in and out of hospitals for the past year due to what I believe is severe anxiety that leads to psychosis. On last admission they added ? bipolar. He is also crossing boundaries with sexual inappropriateness with staff and even his sister (12) and me. I am very concerned about this. I don't want him to violate anyone. Could there be a problem here or is it just hormones and lack of control?
Hi there - Thanks for your question ... There is an excellent piece on Aspergers and Bipolar at http://ajp.psychiatryonline. . . . keep reading
Does anyone else have issues with lying or telling tall tales from their Child with Aspergers? Our son is 9 1/2 years old but only got diagnosed a little over a year ago. After years of knowing something was up with him but no professional saw anything wrong.... What do we do with his lying? He doesn't own up to anything even if we see him doing something. He is also very good at it and he 'pulls the wool over a lot of people's eyes'. Also, I always had the understanding that a child with Asperger's had to be 'handled' in a different way than a regular child, but now his therapist is saying 'why'? I'm very confused. His school has up until now not wanted him to get an IEP, because they don't feel he has needed it. Now his grades have gone down and he is having a hard time with his class work and home work....What can we do? Have you heard of Twice exeptional children'?
You are certainly not alone in experiencing issues about "lying". Some of this may be about him trying to avoid certain feelings/social interactions. So for example if there is some ... . . . keep reading
My son is almost 18 years old. We have been practicing driving since he was 16. He is not begging to drive but is willing to practice occasionally. My problem is that based on his occasional trips into his fantasy world, and his frequent sslf-stim activities, can I be sure he will concentrate on his driving if he is alone? What will he do if he has an accident. His father, who does not live with us, wants him to get his license. Other people see no problem with him getting a license. But, I am terrified. Am I being too protective? Will he ever be able to be independent enough to drive?
I know for a fact that people with Aspergers can drive - and having a diagnosis should certainly not stop you looking at this with him if he wants to ... . . . keep reading

Teaching my daughter "right and wrong"
My daughter goes to school and tells them everything (a dear friend of mine is an aide in her room)I try to explain to her that some things are not other people business, may be private or that they most likely would not be interested. But just when I think I may have gotten through to her she will then ask "is it okay to tell them if we bought a new stove?". Is this where 'social stories' come into play? . . . keep reading
Drawing up an educational contract
I have an 11yr old - year 6 at school. I recently had a meeting with his class teacher and she is having trouble getting him to complete class tasks. He is obsessed with reading (which he does during class time instead of listening) then gets extremely upset because he does not know what is going on in the classroom. I have told the teacher to use this as a reward for completing work which she is doing but he will often just sit at his desk and not do anything for each subjects class task (e.g. complete so many maths questions). I have suggested we draw up a contract (visual) and get him to sign it and refer him to this when he is off task. My question is do you have any resources or previous experience with such a contract which may help us get it right? . . . keep reading
Should we tell his class about Aspergers?
My 14 year old twin boy has Aspergers. We just found out and the psychologist wants to tell the whole class. The problem is that the twin sister is in the same class; I am afraid she may be bullied too. And is he more vulnerable if we tell the class or will it help him? . . . keep reading
